Viva has enhanced its well-established heat pump training by switching to BPEC’s industry-leading Heat Pump Systems programme, which includes superior course material to ensure learners gain the information they need in an engaging and easy to digest format.
This BPEC heat pump qualification we now offer covers air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and an introduction to ground source heat pump (GSHP) technology.
It enables experienced heating installers to develop their skills and knowledge, expand their services into the growing renewables sector and achieve Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation.
Should I train as a heat pump engineer?
Heat pumps are one of the main solutions to the challenge of decarbonising domestic heat. They offer high efficiencies and research has shown that they can provide effective heating in a wide variety of homes, from Victorian terraces and 1960’s tower blocks to pre-1940s semi-detached properties.
Installations are growing year-on-year, stimulated by a variety of measures, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), uplifts to Part L of the Building Regulations and market-based mechanisms, such as government plans to mandate boiler manufacturers to sell a specified number of heat pumps each year.
Heat pump training offers qualified plumbing and heating engineers the opportunity to expand into a high growth sector while setting a firm foundation for the future.
Who is this training course for?
The heat pump systems training programme is designed for learners with existing qualifications and experience in the plumbing and heating sector who want to develop their skills.
Because of the technical nature of this course, learners must hold at a Level 2/3 plumbing or heating qualification as a minimum to meet the entry requirements of this training programme, including Water Regulations/Byelaws (WRAS or an equivalent).
Alternatively, heating installers who can provide documentary evidence of 3 years’ experience installing wet central heating systems may also meet entry requirements.
What does this heat pump training programme cover?
The training programme can cover ASHPs, GSHPs or both:
- Option 1 – Heat Pump Technology + Air Source
- Option 2 – Heat Pump Technology + Ground Source
- Option 3 – Heat Pump Technology + Air Source + Ground Source
Candidates will be provided with a training manual prior to attending the course, which covers the following topics:
- Heat pumps in context.
- How a Heat pump works – principles and components
- Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design
- Domestic hot water, buffer tanks and solar coils
- Ground heat exchangers
- Health and Safety
- Heat pump installation
- Maintenance and fault finding
The practical training takes place in our specialist training heat pump product studio, which is fully kitted out with the latest ASHP appliances, providing learners with the opportunity to put the theory into practice in a supportive environment.
