The UK is going through a difficult and unprecedented time as we struggle against the danger that COVID 19 poses to our health and businesses.
Gas installers are among the trades considered ‘essential’, i.e. when it comes to ensuring gas safety it’s important that end-users still have access to trained installers who can fix faulty appliances and prevent dangerous situations.
And, as many of you work in a solitary capacity, as things slowly return to ‘normal’ (whatever that means!), it’s likely that gas and heating engineers may be able to get back to work quicker than some other more sociable professions.
To help the gas sector keep working safely, the Gas Safe Register has encouraged ACS assessment centres to stay open where possible.
Like most businesses, we’ve had to strip back our offering (for the time being at least…) Gas ACS assessments, however, are still very much available at our purpose-built centre, with some elements available online.
The gas ACS re-assessment is mainly paper based so it’s easy to keep you safe in our classrooms, sticking to government social distancing guidelines. Everything’ being kept squeaky clean too!
But what about the practical element? If you need refresher training, we’re doing this bit ‘virtually’. You get the support and guidance of one of our trainers but from the comfort of your own home, which means no need to come into the centre.
There’s no denying the seriousness of the current situation, but, what’s important is that you a) keep you and your family safe and b) look to the future. Installers working in the gas industry are part of in-demand industry that will bounce back once this is all over.
Many of us have more time on our hands so why not use this wisely. Make sure mandatory qualifications like ACS are up to date (you can complete re-assessment up to six months before the due date), and maybe consider how you could expand and/or enhance your business.
The HSE has said it won’t kick people of the Gas Safe Register during the peak of the COVID19 crisis, but if you’re a gas installer based near Harrogate, there’s no need to wait. We’re here to keep you trading safely and ready to hit the ground running when it’s safe to do so.

Viva offers a range of gas courses, for existing Gas Safe Registered engineers looking to renew their qualifications and new entrants who are starting from scratch.
The UK needs renewable installers if it is going to meet the target of ‘Net Zero’ by 2050, presenting a great opportunity for plumbing and heating engineers looking to upskill.
