Are you considering a career in an in-demand sector with excellent earning potential? Becoming a gas installer could be the perfect choice for you. With no prior experience, Viva Training can equip you with the skills needed to become a Gas Safe Registered engineer in as little as 26 weeks. Here’s everything you need to know about taking this rewarding career path.
Gas Training for New Entrants
At Viva Training, we offer the LCL Awards Managed Learning Programme (MLP), designed specifically for new entrants into the gas industry. This course is perfect for those looking to become Gas Safe Registered—a legal requirement for anyone trading as a gas engineer in the UK. Our comprehensive training covers all the essential qualifications, alongside a work placement, to ensure you’re fully prepared for the job.
We invite you to attend one of our free open days, where we will assess your suitability for the programme and give you a detailed overview of what to expect. Viva Training has successfully guided various individuals—from computer programmers to ex-military personnel—towards fulfilling careers as gas installers.
Why Become a Gas Installer?
The demand for qualified gas installers is higher than ever. With around 2 million domestic gas boilers sold each year in the UK, half of which are installed by independent engineers, there is no shortage of work. Experienced gas engineers earn upwards of £50,000 annually, making this a lucrative career choice.
Furthermore, as the UK continues its push towards a low-carbon future, homeowners are encouraged to replace older, less efficient boilers with modern, energy-saving models. This helps reduce fuel bills and provides a steady stream of installation and servicing work for skilled engineers.
What Will You Learn?
Our new entrants gas course covers everything you need to know to work safely and effectively on domestic gas systems within homes and small businesses. The course culminates in the ACS assessment, a legal requirement for obtaining your Gas Safe registration.
The course is divided into modules, with each section offering both basic and in-depth training. Our experienced tutors, as well as many ex-British Gas installers, provide continuous support throughout the programme. You’ll engage in theoretical and practical learning, with a strong emphasis on gas boiler installation—a particularly profitable area in the domestic gas industry.
In addition to boiler installation, our course also includes training in areas such as:
- Gas cookers
- Gas fires
- Gas meters
- Gas analysers
We also cover many other essential skills, including pipework installation, energy efficiency, health and safety regulations, and Water Regulations (WRAS).
Work Placement Included!
A crucial part of the MLP is completing a portfolio of live installations. If you don’t already have a work placement, Viva Training can help you find one in a convenient location. Training with us is a significant benefit, as many other providers do not offer this service. The work placement is essential for demonstrating your competence in installing, repairing, and servicing gas boilers, as well as any other categories you choose. You’ll need to complete each task five times to qualify, giving you the hands-on experience vital for success in your future career.
Course Structure
Our programme combines classroom-based theory, practical learning, and real-world work experience, all of which contribute to your portfolio. The course is designed to be completed in 26 weeks, but we understand that everyone learns at their own pace. Should you need more time on a particular module or require additional evidence for your portfolio, our flexible schedule allows for this.
The course typically follows this format:
- Weeks 1-3:
Introduction to gas, theory principles, and practical skills, delivered at our training centre. - Week 7:
Preparation for placement and self-directed study. - Week 8+:
Portfolio building and placement alongside a qualified gas engineer. - Week 21:
Portfolio hand-in and certification. - Week 26:
Final revision week and ACS assessments.
Usual hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am – 4 pm, with additional self-directed study on Fridays.
How Much Does It Cost?
The total cost of our new entrants’ gas course is £4,800, including VAT. This represents excellent value for money, especially considering the comprehensive training and support provided. We also offer finance packages to help spread the cost into manageable, low monthly repayments.
Requirements & Qualifications
One of the significant advantages of our Gas Engineer Course is that it requires no formal qualifications. While no prior maths or English qualifications are necessary, you must be able to read, write, and have a basic understanding of mathematics. We conduct an informal assessment before training begins to ensure you’re ready for the course.
Upon completion, you will receive your Pathway to Gas certificate, allowing you to sit the ACS exams. Passing the ACS assessment will earn you the ACS Certificate, the final qualification needed to join the Gas Safe Register and start your new career.
