Gas ACS Assessment Frequently Asked Questions - Viva Training

The Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) is the recognised UK standard for gas engineers, ensuring their competence and safety in the field. Viva Training offers the ACS assessment and reassessment courses needed to qualify and keep up-to-date as a professional gas engineer. Below, we’ll answer common questions about the ACS assessment and reassessment process, helping you understand what to expect and how to prepare.

What Is the ACS Skill Assessment?

The ACS Skill Assessment is the core certification process required for anyone looking to work as a gas engineer in the UK. The ACS assessment tests knowledge and practical skills, formally known as the Accredited Certification Scheme for Gas Engineers, validating an engineer’s ability to work safely with gas installations and appliances. Engineers must complete an initial assessment to gain their qualification, then take a reassessment every five years to refresh their skills and keep up-to-date with current industry standards and regulations. This ongoing process is essential for maintaining Gas Safe registration and legally working in the field.

What Is the Purpose of the ACS?

The ACS serves two key purposes: it initially certifies a gas engineer’s competence and then ensures that all registered engineers continue to meet the latest safety and operational standards throughout their careers. As technology advances and safety standards evolve, regular reassessment keeps engineers updated on new regulations, best practices, and the latest techniques. This commitment to ongoing safety standards ensures that homes and commercial premises across the UK are serviced by qualified, competent engineers who operate safely and effectively.

What Does ACS Stand For?

ACS stands for Accredited Certification Scheme. It is the recognised qualification process for gas engineers in the UK, covering both initial and periodic assessments required to maintain professional qualifications and legally offer gas services.

How Long Does the ACS Assessment Take?

The ACS assessment process varies depending on whether you’re taking the initial or five-year reassessment.

  • Initial Assessment: For those becoming gas engineers for the first time, the ACS initial assessment usually takes up to a week. This assessment covers all fundamental aspects of gas safety and competence, preparing engineers to work safely in the field.
  • Reassessment: Engineers must renew their ACS certification every five years. The reassessment typically takes two to three days if no refresher training is needed. For those opting to review their skills before ACS reassessment, a refresher course may extend the process to four or five days.

At Viva Training, we offer both in-centre and online refresher training to help engineers prepare, although refresher training is optional.

What Does the ACS Assessment Involve?

The ACS assessment is divided into two parts: theory and practical.

  • Theory: The theoretical component includes multiple-choice and written papers, testing engineers on the knowledge required to handle gas safely. The theory section is an open book, allowing engineers to refer to essential standards and guidelines, including British Standards and technical bulletins.
  • Practical: The practical test is a hands-on assessment that evaluates core competencies necessary for safe gas work. Known as the CCN1 Core Gas Safety assessment, the practical portion includes tightness testing, gas rating, installation checks, flue flow and spillage testing, and using a gas analyser.

Viva Training’s purpose-built ACS training bays simulate real-life scenarios, giving engineers a realistic and controlled environment to demonstrate their skills.

The practical portion generally includes around eight tasks covering core skills needed for a gas engineer. Each task tests a specific aspect of safety and competence, ensuring that engineers can apply what they’ve learned in real-world situations. Engineers often complete this portion within a day, depending on their complexity and familiarity with the tasks.

What Are the Required Documents for ACS Assessment?

When attending an ACS assessment or reassessment at Viva Training, engineers should bring:

  • Current Qualification Certificates: Evidence of previous qualifications, especially if attending for reassessment.
  • Identification: A valid UK driving licence or passport is required as proof of ID.
  • Photographs: Two passport-sized photos for certification and registration records.

Having these documents ensures a smooth registration and qualification process on your assessment day.

Can I Take a Refresher Course Before ACS Reassessment?

Viva Training offers refresher courses to help engineers prepare for the ACS reassessment. While not compulsory, a refresher course can be highly beneficial, especially for engineers who want to review regulation updates or practice their skills in a structured environment. Refresher training is available both in-centre and online, providing flexibility for engineers who want extra preparation. Our free refresher training option at Viva Training is a valuable resource, especially if you need a recap before taking your reassessment.

What Happens if I Let My ACS Certificate Expire?

If your ACS certificate expires, you are no longer eligible to work legally as a gas engineer. Allowing your certification to lapse by more than 12 months requires you to complete the initial ACS assessment again, a more time-consuming and costly process than reassessment. For this reason, planning your reassessment is recommended, ideally within six months before the certificate’s expiration date.

Why Is It Important to Stay Gas Safe Registered?

Staying on the Gas Safe Register is a legal requirement for all gas engineers in the UK. It demonstrates to clients and employers that an engineer is qualified, competent, and up-to-date with the latest safety practices. Failing to maintain certification and registration can have serious consequences, including legal action and fines.
