Your Portfolio

Your portfolio forms a very important part of your certification. It involves gathering evidence of installation, repair, and servicing work in real environments under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered engineer. Don’t worry if you haven’t produced evidenced work in this way, we have in-centre support as well as guides to help you succeed.

VIVA Training conducts comprehensive workshops prior to the placement. These sessions are designed to prepare you for your upcoming experience, providing you with the necessary tools and knowledge to make the most of your placement. By attending the pre-placement workshops, you’re better equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with hands-on experience. This preparation can significantly enhance your learning during the placement and ensure a swift submission of your portfolio.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a suitable placement, we can support you with this!

Course Duration

Our gas training course takes 26 weeks, with your time split between the centre, e-learning (Self Directed Study), and on-site placement. Usual hours are 8:30 am – 4 pm. Although the course is 26 weeks in total the amount of weeks actually spent in the centre will be much less.

Week 1-3 introduction in the centre (Monday – Thursday) Self Directed Study day (Friday)

Week 7 self directed study and preparation for placement

Week 8 + Portfolio Training and placement alongside a gas engineer local to our training centre.

Week 21 portfolio hand-in and certification

Week 26 admission onto ACS refresher training and Initial Assessment Suite

The Full-Time Course Schedule

A total of 7 weeks will be spent in the centre – spread out across the 26 week course duration. You will not be in the centre for a block of 7 weeks!

A week for revision and ACS Exams will be held as the final stage of the process, and carried out once your portfolio has been completed and certified.

This Managed Learning Programme meets the latest requirements of IG/1 Standard.

Benefits of the New Entrants Course

The benefits of this course to your career as well as potential income prospects are massive. Our Gas Course is an accredited Managed Learning programme or MLP and has been designed to offer hands-on training focused around building your skills and knowledge, not just teaching you how to sit an exam. Our course is a great alternative to an apprenticeship, you will gain the same skills, confidence, knowledge and qualifications at the end, however our course can be completed in 6 months, whereas a traditional apprenticeship for an engineer can take years.

This means:

  • You could be earning in as little at 6 months.
  • You don’t need to stop working to complete your course
  • Designed for people with skills in other fields who want to retrain.
  • There are no hidden costs. The one price you pay includes everything from books, portfolio help, placement hours, and exam fees.
  • There are no minimum entry qualifications to start the course.

Requirements & Qualifications

The great thing about our Gas Engineer Course is that, unlike an apprenticeship, there are no minimum qualification expectations. While no formal Maths and English qualification is required, trainees must be able to read and write as well as have an understanding of basic mathematics. We will perform an informal check before you begin your training to ensure we are happy you can undertake the course, and that’s it!

This programme is perfect for people fresh out of the armed forces or have owned their own business and never required the minimum GCSEs so many jobs ask for.

The qualifications you will receive after completing our course is your Pathway to Gas certificate, which enables you to sit your ACS Exams upon passing the ACS assessment, you will receive your ACS Certificate, which is all you need to join the gas register.

Course Location

This Course is based in our Halifax Training centre located close to the M62 with great access from all over the country.

Our purpose built centre offers state of the art classrooms and workshops where you can see the theoretical principles you will learn about in action and get in-centre experience working on boilers, central heating and pipework.

We find our students love our facilities so much they are one of the main reasons they keep coming back for further training.

Parking:

Please note all trainees are asked to park in the free car park opposite the mill. If you have a large van with ladders, or roof rocks and won’t fit under the 2.1m barrier, please get in touch with us and we will grant you a permit to park inside the mill complex

A look around the course, with Allen Hart

You may recognise Allen from YouTube. His channel has over 80K subscribers with his videos generating thousands of views. Viva Training works closely with Allen to provide our students and the wider public insights into the HVAC industry as well as tips and tricks for fellow tradesmen. This is his tour of the New Entrants Gas Course with VIVA’s Founder, Richard Firth.

For our Managed Learning Programme we don’t require any pre-requisite qualifications. Not even English & Math GCSE, all we will do is an informal assessment to judge your ability to complete the course.

Yes, we are happy to split the remaining balance due after the £500 deposit into set payments. The remaining balance will be split into two equal payments. The first due 3 weeks before commencement of the course, the second, 3 weeks after the course start date. We will contact you via email to arrange for your start with us and invoicing for the remaining balance.

If choosing to pay via deposit, all balance must be settled before qualifying.

If you choose to pay with a deposit, your deposit of £500 is due straight away and is what secures your place on the course.

While we do not find direct employment after the course, we do provide you with all the skills and knowledge to gain employment or start up your own business.

Of course, you will just need to enter their details above or when you get in touch with us. We will require to speak to the individual trainee(s) before the course starts to complete our informal assessment.

You don’t need anything to start the course. All we recommend is you bring some steel toe-cap boots and work trousers for your practical days.

Your qualification codes dictate the devices you can work on/install. Generally speaking you will be able to work on all CENWAT devices including domestic boilers, central heating. Other qualification codes i.e CKR1 and HTR1 are available if evidenced in your portfolio. Speak to us if you are interested in specific appliances.

To become a practising gas engineer, there is no prerequisite to have any prior plumbing knowledge; however, there are many tradespeople who learn more than one area of expertise.

A portfolio is a body of evidence you produce to prove your competence in working with certain gas appliances. You must evidence the devices you wish to work on in your career to be signed off in those sectors.

Unfortunately the days in centre MUST be completed in centre as most of the work, other than exams, is practical based and the theory works best surrounded by the appliances being discussed. We do offer an online supplement module to allow students to work through the theory alongside your centre days to give you the best opportunity to succeed.

It’s never too early or too late to choose a life in the trades. With out New Entrants Managed Learning Programme for Gas Engineers, we make it as simple as possible to train/retrain. Our Course is designed for mature learners between 18 and 65 and we see a range of age groups go on to have a successful career in the gas and Heating Industry.
